Ayurveda

Ayurveda

Ayurveda is composed of two root words. Ayu translates as life and refers to all aspects of life, seen and unseen, within and all around us. It includes all of Nature – in essence, the 37 elements that we have explored in the earlier sections of the course. Veda means knowledge. This is a knowledge that is more than just an accumulation of information – it is the kind of deep knowing that one calls “wisdom” and this wisdom is pervasive throughout the universe, arising as a function of the conscious interaction of life with life.

The foundation of Ayurveda rests in the principles, energies, rhythms and movements of life and nature. As a science, Ayurveda is a study of life in its wholeness – observing living beings in their interactions with their environment. As a healing system it works with a spiritual intent – its development was (and still is) intertwined with yoga, the two working as sisters to provide a basis for mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health. The two systems were intended to help remove suffering and provide a basis for attaining nirvana – the bliss of simply being who we truly are, living in harmony with our own inner nature and Nature all around us.

Ayurveda and yoga have the same philosophical and spiritual roots. However, it could be said that yoga primarily addresses spiritual suffering/well-being through the vehicle of the body, mind and heart, while Ayurveda primarily addresses mental/ emotional/ physical suffering and well-being through a foundation of spiritual principles.
